The Nilgiri Hills or the Blue Mountain scape is a captivating terrain where the incredibly beautiful abode of Udhagamandalam is perched at an altitude of 2286 m.

Otherwise referred to as Ooty it is known as the Queen of Hill Stations. Famed for its salubrious climate, pretty gardens and fabulous cottages, Udhagamandalam is great for a break when monotony strikes.

Founded in 1819 by John Sullivan, the former Collector of Coimbatore, Udhagamandalam still continues to retain the old world charm. The summer palaces of the former Maharajas encircled by picturesque surroundings are now converted into hotels. The Nilgiri library here has a picture display of the past.

Udhagamandalam prides in its breathtaking beauty. The much adored Botanical Gardens covered with blossoming trees, shrubs and colourful flower beds make it a sylvan spot.

Landscaped over 22 hectares, there is a fossillised tree, crescent shaped lily pond, a bandstand, a conservatory and fountain terraces. Pony and mini train rides are great excitements here.

Around 10 km away lies Doddabetta, the highest peak in the Nilgiri range. Charming views of the hills and valleys around can be captured closely through a micro telescope at the observatory atop.

A picturesque race course beckons bidders during the turf season. Flower and dog shows attract garden and pet lovers too.

Hobbies like golf, tennis, snooker, fishing, hiking and trekking can be pursued during a holiday here. Other fascinating trips to spots in the vicinity include Mukurti Peak, Wellingdon, Avalanche, Kalahatti Falls, Snowdon, Elk Hill rock temple, Ketti Valley, Wenlock Downs, Cairn Hill, Dolphin's Nose, Lamb's Rock, Pykara Dam and Frog Hill.

For those keen on anthropology, a visit to the tribal villages of Todas, Kotas, Kurumbas, Irulas and Panias provide pastoral and cultural glimpses of their lifestyle.
