Just two and a half hours away from Siliguri located at an altitude of 1767 km is Mirik, where one can smell citrus in the air tinged with the fragrance of cardamom and tea. A lovely hillstation, Mirik is once again not a very commercially exploited place yet. The shy smiles of the hill folk, a lot of sunshine, alpine forests make Mirik a picture postcard destination and you want to go back to savour in its serenity. You could take long strolls along the cobbled path around the lake or better still bicycle away along the |
Sumendu lake lapping up the stillness of the water and letting the leisurely pace overtake you.
Perched high above town is the Bokar Gompa, a brightly coloured one whose monks are Mahayana Buddhists. Then if you are in the mood to explore a bit, just about 10 minutes from the taxi stand on the west side of the lake are three small Hindu temples each dedicated to Hanuman, Shiva and Kalamata. And when tired of walking or bicycling on the east side of the lake one could hire boats for half hour rides.
To catch the breathtaking snow clad Himalayas in all their splendour one could view them from Rameetay Dara and Deosi Dara. And the adventurous and the fit could of course venture out on their own with a little guidance from the locals for short treks.
