A lot is being said and written about three Bollywood journalists turning directors but they are quite different from each other. Kunal Kohli ('Hum Tum', 'Mujhse Dosti Karogi') was very lucky to get a break with Yash Raj and was more into 'partisan' box-office and reviews due to which he had leave Zee (‘Chalo Cinema') and later Star Plus (‘Hello Cinema'). Khalid Mohammed who has directed 'Fiza' and 'Tehzeeb' is more into Bollywood reviews in the print media and is still active.
'Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye' director Samar Khan is not as lucky as Kunal or Khalid but still gets a 'Shemaroo' production and is a former TV journalist for Star Plus and was more into news and interviews for them. Lets check out the music of his directorial debut venture.
The first track 'Bhool Jayenge Hum' has some decent lyrics by Sameer ' Bhool jayenge hum saari duniya ke gham, Ek pal, Do Ghadhi, Tum milo to Sanam‘. It's soft romantic though routine Reshammiya romantic duet. Udit and Shreya vibe well and sound good together. There is also a ditto space filler of ‘Bhool Jayenge Hum'.
The title track 'Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye' has some different lyrics by Sameer, 'Yun rootho na tum, Mehbooba, Hans do to chain aa jaye, Haan kuch meetha ho jaye. It's a very soothing to ear type of song, which is an absolute delight. Himesh proves why he is so much in circulation these days, especially for melodious compositions. The intermingling of the classical instruments like 'sitar' and flute is wonderful and sound quite soothing. It's a song to perk up a depressed mood. There is a just a hint of Himesh's 'O Jaana' from his super hit album 'Tere Naam'. Some good vocals by Sonu, Shreya and Jayesh Gandhi.
We have another version of the title track 'Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye' by Arpita Mukherjee (TVS Saregama finalist) is good but slightly below the first version. The basic composition is the same as the first track.
Next up 'O Jaana Tenu Rab Da' goes 'Tumne humse pyar na Kiya, par ye dil hai ke manta nahin'. The more one hears Kumar Ganjawala sing the more convinced one gets about his versatility and class. The song starts off with very high-pitched vocals and gives a feeling of a sad and slow song ahead but later changes to a fast paced rhythmic composition. Sunidhi is as efficient as ever.
'Lagne lage ho tum kitne pyare, Hone lage haum dil se tumhare'. Lyrics are simple though ordinary and are another routine romantic duet by Sonu and Alka.
Next we have a piece of music the first part of which is from the title track 'Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye' and the second part is a straight lift from the 'Main Hoon Na' qawwali. What was the need of doing it?
'Aane Do ' (thumri version) by Dr. Shoma Ghosh is a semi-classical composition. Her style of singing is top notch (a style of classical singing that the late Begum Akhtar excelled in). The lyrics are very apt and have a 'mujra' style that is reminiscent of the 'Umrao Jaan' era. The subtle use of 'sitar' along with 'tabla' makes enhance the 'thumri'. Those who enjoy semi-classical music but don't want it too heavy will appreciate the track.
'Aane Do Royal Stag Mega Mix' (that incorporates the name of the sponsor 'Royal Stag') is one mega mix that is very different from the original version (which obviously was a 'thumri and so the style of singing was semi-classical and the composition traditional). But even the remixed version manages to leave an impact on the listener. It has not been remixed just for the sake of it (unlike some of the recent offerings). The track starts with a piece of music from the title song, with rap portions in between and then moves over the now happening Suzanne (recently heard in 'Kaal') who croons 'Come away with me I will make you see. We will ever be in the land of fantasy'. The combined vocals of Jayesh Gandhi and Dr. Shoma (in her original semi-classical style) in this remixed version is delightful and tastefully done.
All in all 'Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye' is a good to decent album with two very good tracks 'Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye' and the excellent 'Aane Do' (both versions) that will find some appreciation and commercial success, if marketed properly. Worth a buy and try.
